Malawi, March 2015. Heavy rainfall in January caused massive flooding in southern Malawi, affecting many districts covered by ECRP, a resilience programme led by Christian Aid. Nsanje and Chikwawa were badly affected, while other areas experienced flash floods and crop damage. Programme activities were put on hold in the worst hit areas, as attention switched to the flood response, with some programme funds redirected to support the relief efforts. While ECRP areas were severely impacted by the floods, positive stories emerged of how ECRP has played a role in helping communities better prepare and recover. ECRP is a five-year initiative to improve food security, reduce vulnerability and strengthen the resilience of around 600,000 people directly and up to 1.6 million altogether in 7 districts of Malawi prone to natural disasters and climatic hazards.
Running until 2016, the £21m programme is funded by UK aid from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), Irish Aid and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The goal is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger and increase the resilience of vulnerable communities.
